UN Peace Ambassador shocked at years of remand prisoners in Ghana
A United Nations Eminent Peace Ambassador has expressed shock at the number of years some people have served as remand prisoners in Ghana.
His Excellency Reverend Dr. Martin Kofi Danso could not believe it when he was told that some people are currently in captivity in prisons across the country on remand for fifteen years.
Dr. Danso who did not understand why people should be on remand for three months when their cases had not been finalized, was shocked to the marrow when the Ambassador Extraordinaire of Ghana Prisons, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng revealed that people have been on remand because most of them cannot find their dockets.
“There are some inmates who are currently on remand for fifteen years and this has greatly contributed to congestion in the prisons,” Mr. Kwarteng said.
The Prisons’ Ambassador made the statement in an interview with Dr. Danso after the latter had contributed to paying for the fines of six petty offenders at the Kumasi Local Prison.
“This is inhumane!” the Peace Ambassador exclaimed. “In Ghana, we have a legal system, not a justice system,” he added.
Dr. Kofi Danso is a philanthropist based in Canada fighting for the rights of the underprivileged and providing financial assistance to the marginalized in society.
