The school rejected my son because of his leg – a mother’s plight

A mother of a four-year-old boy has narrated how a school refused her son admission in the Ashanti Region because he is physically challenged.

Musah Yakubu is a four-year-old boy who has his right leg crippled restricting his movement.

The woman who revealed her identity to the crimecheckghana as Azumah said her child was born with the disability.  She says her child, Musa Yakubu was taken to various health facilities for treatment but to no avail

“The left leg was disabled by birth and the nurse notified me. We were given a transfer to Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was on treatment for a month. Afterwards, the doctor in charge told us he can’t continue and that there were some white doctors coming to Ghana so we should go home and he will give us a call when the doctors arrive. He told us not to call him but from there we never heard from him,” She told crimecheckghana.

Madam Azumah continued that after two years of not hearing from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, they were later referred to Duayaw Nkwanta General Hospital. They went as directed but after two to three months the doctor also informed them he is unable to administer further treatment and that amputation remains the only option.

“We were told by the doctor that he can’t treat my child and he referred us to Koforidua where the amputation was going to take place. We have no money to travel to Koforidua let alone the cost of the surgery.” Azumah said in tears.

She stressed that Musah Yakubu was refused admission by school because he is unable to walk. When he finally gained admission into a school, because of his disability, she had to carry him to and back from school.

“The heads of the school told us he couldn’t be admitted because he is disabled. Few months to the lockdown, he gained admission and I have to carry him to school. Some of the teachers have been helping by bringing him home after school,” she added.
