Please help me – 40-year-old woman with elephantiasis cries

40-year-old Yaa Dokua’s leg has been affected by elephantiasis. This was due to delay in her sought for medical attention when the ailment started like a boil.

Mrs Dokua said the ailment started eight years ago and getting medical attention after it was worsening had been a struggle. She said after a neighbour supported her to visit the hospital she couldn’t go back to undertake diagnostics because of financial difficulties which worsened the situation.

“A neighbour supported me to go to the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital and the doctors asked me to come back to undergo diagnostics but the due date has elapsed because I did not have money.” She told crimecheckghana.

Her struggles

She said the doctors demanded Two Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis to enable her undergo ultrasound scan but when she told her family they could only raise One Hundred and Ninety-Five Ghana cedis for her from the community.

Mrs Dokua said she cannot do anything on her own and taking care of herself has become difficult if not for her son who had to drop out of school to take care of her.

“I never thought I will end up like this. I have never had relief and I get sad that my older child has to drop out of school to do petty jobs to take care of me. One of my aunties who was seeing to my welfare left because her daughter has given birth so life has become difficult.” She cried.

Crime Check Foundation, CCF through its donors gave her Two Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty Ghana cedis to enable her undergo diagnosis to determine further treatment as it counts on the public to support her.
