Breast Cancer: More hands needed to save women

Saving women from the perils of breast cancer is capital intensive.

Sensitization outreaches, breast screening programmes, and support for the treatment of breast cancer bear huge expenses.

Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) began with funding from the coffers of its Executive Director, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng who was already engaged with funding other equally important projects.

The high cost of fighting the disease put pressure on his dwindling purse, which meant that further support needed to be sought.

Intrigued by MBCF’s initiative, Unity and Harmony International Club based in Germany, which has branches in other countries came in to lend support to push for the implementation of its programmes.

MBCF fights breast cancer throughout the year, opposed to the once-a-year October reminder of the devastating effect of the disease by government.

As part of its support to the MBCF initiative, Unity and Harmony International Club donated an amount of Ghc 9,300 to help advance the fight against the disease.

An initiative the fund was used to support was one of the counseling programmes organized at the offices of MBCF, which had an allocation of Ghc 2,000.

The programme, which had an attendance of 14 patients, is the second the Foundation has organized.

After receiving free counseling from a Senior Psychologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the patients were given refreshments in addition to receiving Ghc 50 each.

The money also catered for the services of the resource person, fuel, and other miscellaneous.

The gesture of Unity and Harmony International Club is worth mentioning for applause for its support to save humanity.

Their contribution has helped Meena Breast Cancer Foundation make a significant impact on the lives of many women who would have died because they could not afford basic breast care services.

It is our sincerest prayer that they increase in wealth to continue to give further assistance to a good course.

Their gesture is emulative and we urge others to take a cue.

The late wife of Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng was the brain behind MBCF before she passed on two years ago.

Mrs. Amina Kwarteng’s wish was to support women suffering from breast cancer while she was in her sick bed battling the disease.
