23-yr-old man jailed 7 yrs for defiling girl, 12

Obletey Thomas, a 23-year-old inmate of the Winneba Local Prison, has narrated how he raped an adolescent girl in a bush.

The young man admitted forcing a 12-year-old girl into sleeping with him when they were sent on an errand.

He was speaking on Crime Check Foundation’s prime programme, ‘Time With the Prisoner Series’.

“My mother sent me in the company of the girl. When we got to a bush I forced to have intercourse with her,” he recounted.

Obletey indicated that the girl had a well-developed physique despite her age and was attracted to him.

“She was fat so I thought I could do something with her,” he said.

He said the incident happened the very first day he met the victim.

After the incident, he said the girl threatened she was going to expose him, and ‘I arrogantly gave her the nod’.

The unemployed man admits he is fond of ladies and has been spending lavishly on them to court their affection.

“I have lost count of the number of women I have slept with,” he told crimecheckghana.org.

Obletey did not enjoy the benefit of formal education after dropping out of school in Primary 1 due to financial difficulties.

He said he had to work to support his mother who could barely provide a square meal for them.

His years at the prison have not been wasteful as he has been equipped with sewing skills to enable him to re-integrate properly into society.

 ‘I can sew uniforms of the security services and any other type of attire,” he said.

The inmate says he will be able to take proper care of his younger brother but his mother is not alive to enjoy his fruits.

“My mother is died recently. I nearly smashed the phone when my uncle called to tell me about her passing,” he sobbed.

Obletey appealed to the general public to help him buy an electric sewing machine to enable him to easily set up his business.
