A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to two years imprisonment over Ninety Ghana cedis debt.
Prince Odae was jailed by a court in Koforidua after he was found guilty of stealing.
The inmate is said to have stolen a ‘Wawa’ board valued at Ninety Ghana cedis only.
Odae told crimecheckghana.org at the Awutu Camp Prison during a visit that he was innocent but he could not defend himself.
According to him, as a lumber operator, he was contracted by a company to decorate the floor of their offices with wooden boards.
Odae said he pulled out three wooden boards belonging to a colleague in his absence and delivered them to the customer.
He narrated that two gentlemen from the camp of his colleague confronted him accusing him of stealing the woods though he had not taken any money from the customer. “I told the owner I was going to take the money later because the owner of the wood was not around. Later when I came back for the money, some gentlemen confronted me on who authorized me to take the boards,” he recounted.
The father of two said he was whisked away to a nearby police station and was detained pending trial.
He was found guilty of stealing after his unsuccessful attempt to explain his side of the story and is currently serving his sentence at the Awutu Camp Prison.
Crime Check Foundation (CCF) has however made his imprisonment shorter following the payment of his fine of Two Thousand Four Hundred Ghana cedis.
He has since been released.
The payment of the fine was funded by a Germany-based donor, Morgan Fasbender.
