I have to pay Ghc 6,000 every three weeks to survive breast cancer-Woman cries

A breast cancer patient, Umoani Iddrisu would have to raise Six Thousand Ghana cedis almost every three weeks to pay for an injection meant to stop breast cancer from spreading to other parts.

She said she has undergone several surgeries to treat the cancer but there has been no improvement in her condition prompting doctors to recommend Herceptin injection which would cost Six Thousand Ghana cedis per dosage.

Madam Iddrisu indicated that relatives drained their finances to support her during her initial treatment and now it is left to her to fight for her life.

“I underwent three Chemotherapy sessions and surgeries but there was no improvement. Doctors then recommended Herceptin injection as the only option to save my life. The injection is expensive and I cannot afford it. I am pleading with you to come to my aid,” she appealed.

The dejected woman advised women to constantly check their breast to detect any possible sign of the ailment for early treatment as she regrets seeking late treatment, which is now taking a toll on her finances and causing her awful pain.

“The pain alone can kill and the treatment will take all your money. My advise to other women is that they should take the health of their breasts seriously so as not to face what I am going through. Go for regular check ups,” she said.

Meanwhile the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation (CCF), Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng has advocated the inclusion of the treatment of breast cancer on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) due to its high cost.

“Many people lose their lives because they cannot afford the treatment of the disease. Poverty must not be a reason for people to lose their lives so efforts should be made to add breast cancer to the NHIS to curtail the lost of lives,” he said.
