MY SICK AND POOR MOTHER IS DYING. WHO WILL HELP HER? – LITTLE DAUGHTER CRIES FOR HELP
20-year-old Mommie is an example of the phrase ‘I have nobody to turn to’ as she struggles to single handedly fend for her sick mother and herself.
In a recent interview with Crime Check Foundation’s Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Madam Helena, Mommie’s mother narrated their ordeal highlighting the impact of her sickness on her daughter.
“Because of my condition, my daughter had to drop out of school just when she was about to write her BECE. All we do now is beg people for money before we can eat, she said amid tears.
Being a single mother who lives in Aburi,a town in the Akuapim South Municipal District in the Eastern Region, Madam Helena says she had no means of income and so resorted to cutting firewood from the woods and selling them in the various markets. “I did not have a steady job. What I used to do before falling ill, was to go to the woods and get some firewood to come sell so that my daughter and I can get something to eat.,” she recalled.
“One day I was going about my business as usual, when I tripped and fell down. The firewood I was carrying fell heavily on my neck and my waist. When I gained consciousness, I was on admission at the Koforidua Hospital,” he mentioned.
Madam Helena since the accident has difficulty breathing or even talking properly. She is now carried around as her legs are failing her as well.
Her condition keeps deteriorating because all she has is her 20-year-old daughter who has to be by her side most of the time and so cannot do anything laudable to make ends meet.
One would wonder where Madam Helena’s family or even the father of her children are. Well, it looks like people around her are very much aware of her situation, but are just not ready to help.
“My daughter’s father is aware I am ill and yet he does not seem to care, because he has a new woman. He uses the path behind my house a lot and yet has never come to see me or check on his daughter. I have an older child, but I do not know where my child is. It is only this young one I have,” Madam Helena said amid tears.
